Also, the scanning is necessary to assess the kidney function, to diagnose the chronic or acute cystitis, pyelonephritis, detect tumors and neoplasms. Before the hemodialysis and surgical interventions on the bladder a preliminary renal ultrasound is always required.

For men the examination of the prostate is conducted during the ultrasound if adenoma or inflammation is suspected.

Bladder ultrasound for women, if necessary, is supplemented by a study of the genitals located in the small pelvis. It can be required for the differential diagnosis of diseases of the bladder, appendages and uterus.

Contraindications

Extremely overflow of the bladder in the case, when it’s not possible to show the ultrasound situation. The presence of the drains in the abdominal cavity, the trauma of the bladder and kidneys are also direct contraindications to this procedure.

Preparation

The patient should prepare for the examination, otherwise the obtained results will be incorrect. The bladder is scanned only in a filled state, that’s why before the procedure the patient should drink 1.5-2 liters of still water.

Moreover, the examination is carried out on an empty stomach. In some cases, a doctor may tell the patient, on the contrary, to exclude the consuming of water and empty the bladder before the procedure.

Overweight people should prepare for this examination 3 days in advance. To reduce flatulence, a special diet is prescribed, which involves excluding the dairy products, legumes, and cereals. Medicines may also be prescribed to reduce gas production.

If there are urgent indications for undergoing the procedure, preparation for kidney ultrasound is not performed and the patient is examined urgently.

How is the kidney and bladder ultrasound carried out?

The patient should come prepared. To examine the kidneys, the patient lies on the couch on his stomach, or sits down. Sometimes the kidneys are examined when a person is standing. The examinee will be asked to take several deep breaths to assess organ mobility.

To examine the bladder, the patient lies on his back and through the anterior abdominal wall in the lower abdomen its condition is assessed.

Interpretation

The kidneys consist of several sections: the parenchyma and the calyx-pelvic system (the reservoir in which urine is initially formed). The parenchyma can be increased, decreased echogenicity. According to these features, the doctor can determine the presence of inflammatory processes.

The size of the paired organ shouldn’t be out of normal range. All changes indicate pathologies: atrophy, inflammation, etc. In the parenchyma of the kidneys, cysts, the benign and malignant tumors are often diagnosed.

In the calyx-pelvis system, calculi, necroliths or renal gravel can be visualized. The latter phenomenon is observed in every third patient. This is due to the poor quality drinking water that we consume. It is far from normal and contains many salts.

In the bladder, the doctor can detect calculi, stones, renal gravel, diverticulum, tumors, inflammation. The adrenal glands are also assessed. Usually, they should not be shown, but if there are any increases or signs of pathological abnormalities, all these data must be entered into the research results.

After the ultrasound, you will receive a description of the state of the genitourinary system. After that, the patient goes to his attending physician, who makes a diagnosis and develops further therapy tactics.

Eating rules before the procedure

The reliability of the obtained results will depend on your preparation, responsibility and attitude to the examination. In order for the doctor to understand the situation and assess the condition of your organs, firstly it is necessary to empty the intestines. It should be empty and free of gas.

Exclude all food causing active fermentation. In the summer there are all raw vegetables and fruits, especially pears, apples, grapes, cucumbers. It’s better not to eat brown bread. Black bread is also not worth eating. Exclude sauerkraut and any other gas-producing foods. Before the procedure, it’s allowed to drink water, but not mineralized and carbonated.
